TWO Swan Valley wineries scooped the pool at this year’s Royal Show as locally produced wines competed against wines from interstate.

With 26 judges determining the medals from 2119 exhibits provided by 299 entrants, the most isolated state’s wineries held their own.

Houghton Wines in the Swan Valley clinched four major awards, taking out the Most Successful West Australian Exhibitor; Wines of Provenance Best Red or White Varietal for its Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon 2001, 2008 and 2013; Best West Australian White Table Wine; and Best Dry White Table Wine Blends for its Heritage White Blend 2011.

Mandoon Estate in Caversham won the Best West Australian Wine, Most Successful West Australian Exhibitor processing under 300 tonnes and Best West Australian Dry Red Table Wine for its Mandoon Estate Frankland River Reserve Shiraz 2014.

In Margaret River, the Best Semillon Sauvignon Blanc/ Sauvignon Blanc Semillon went to Xanadu winery while Heydon Estate’s Cowaramup winery walked away with Best Chardonnay for The Willow Chardonnay 2013.

Another Margaret River Winery, Watershed Premium Wines, won Best Cabernet Sauvignon for its Awakening Cabernet Sauvignon 2014.

Of the interstate wineries, Penfolds Wines took out the trophy for the highest average points for five or more entries as well as Best Fortified Wine for Penfolds Grandfather Rare Tawny NV.

Australian Vintage walked away with the Best Wine of the Show, Best White Table Wine and Best Semillon for its McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon 2007. Bleasdale Vineyards claimed Best Dry Red Varietal for its Second Innings Malbec 2015. Best Pinot Noir went to Eddystone Point with its Pinot Noir 2015.

Best Red Table Wine was awarded to W Salter and Son, for Best 2014 Vintage Dry Red Table Wine and Best Shiraz for its Pepperjack Shiraz 2014. Coldstream Hills went home with the trophy for Coldstream Hills Blanc De Blanc 2011 Best Sparkling Wine.

Berrigan Wines won Best Sauvignon Blanc for its Berrigan Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and Pewsey Vale walked away with Best Riesling for Pewsey Vale Vineyard the Contours Riesling 2012.

The medal tally continued in Victoria, with Tahbilk Pty Ltd carrying off two awards for Best 2016 Vintage Dry White Table Wine for Tahbilk Viognier 2016 and Best Dry White Varietal for Tahbilk Marsanne 2012.
